Hi!

Critiques are a hard job, not just because it requires the person to analyze the work thoroughly; but it requires one to be vigilant with grammar, spellings, norms, sequence of events, reader's capacity, definition of the people who can read the work... there's so much to tell, but there's little time to spend and talk about the matter.

But it has to be done, you know why?

Critique is not a bad thing! I'm saying this from personal experience. If handled carefully (more on this later, sweethearts) it can actually help in improvements, and it also helps in setting the writer's direction and - who knows - awakens the voice from deep within. Its that, which makes critique a much needed tool towards improvement as a writer.

Here in PoeticalCondition, most people would know of:

:iconrandomphilosopher: , :iconprettyflour: , :iconmichel-le-fou: , :icondannymechanist:

They are wonderful critics, and when not being a part of PC, they are being helpful to the community in features and commissions and forum posting. Even collecting exceptionally good works.

Among people who have been present often or frequently here on dA, and had been among the earliest submitters to our group, and now have built for themselves a substantial standing, include among them:

:iconladyofsilver: - although not very often online here on dA, she still is a really good writer. With that said, she's an equally good critic you can head to, and definitely deserves the mention.

:iconmalintra-shadowmoon: - I have critiqued many of her poems, but it doesn't change the fact that she's a part of the DLR team, has some really good ideas which she has managed to portray well with her writing, and at the same time, her willingness to look at works written and improve where corrections are needed. Corrections here, are grammar, spelling, or punctuation (since English is not her primary language).

:iconaerode: - his interview series, his participation as a part of the community, as well as his group support, is good to know honestly.

Its a perfect opportunity to give everyone advice, especially those who aren't very confident and tend to stay quiet. Heck, I used to submit my own works to this folder just because I trusted the judgement of my team. We all trusted each other, and still do - and we've come a long way. More on this is below:

Good feedback brings confidence in greater amounts than a simple "fav" or a simple comment. This is me talking from personal experience. I was no different than the average deviant when I first joined. I didn't progress that much. As a critic, however, the whole perspective changed: I could understand the difference between a good poem, and a good poet. And its not just me: It was everyone of us who were a part of this group.

To understand this better, I'd like to refer to previous critique department newsletter's we've posted recently:

When you're guaranteed to be given feedback - mandatory feedback, at that - then why worry? We're part of a community in which everyone's equal and everyone's awesome. That's what makes the critique department special - we're going to do our best, just to help you stand on your feet, and write poems. Whether you've just started writing poetry, or you're a thorough professional, you'd inevitably reach a point where someone's opinion would be needed - and that's where the critic comes in. We've been there, so we'll do whatever it takes, both for you and for your poem.

above is the link to the works critiqued by the group, that have been handled by various members of this critique department, past and present alike.

So, how can you help? Just by reading this journal, you've helped :)

For those who feel it isn't enough, don't hesitate to tell us your experience with PoeticalCondition's Critique Department. Suggestions are welcome.

Cheers :)

Right, most writers shun critiques because common criticism is often negative. Even Shelley or Matthew Arnold may have been. But it ought to balance + and -.
